Music is an integral and important part of The Mead School life. Children are given opportunities for performing, listening and appraising, improvising and composing. Class music is taught using the Kodaly principles. The choir features prominently and there is a lively string group, wind band and drumming group. Many children learn recorder in small year groups. Individual lessons offered for violin, cello, piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar and keyboard are taught by specialist staff. Children have been highly successful in Associated Board music examinations. Theory of music is also taught.
The musical highlight of the year is the ‘Summer Show’ when a full musical is presented and staged at a local public theatre – Trinity Arts Centre.
Outings to London and local theatres and concert halls to see the work of professionals are integrated into the syllabus. An enthusiastic and successful ballet department prepares girls and boys for appropriate Professional Teachers of Dancing examinations.
