Key Stage 2

In the Junior department the work is largely subject based although cross curricular links are made to prevent areas becoming too narrow.  We offer a broad curriculum including all National Curriculum subjects, French and Religious Education.  Certain subjects are either wholly or partially taught by subject specialists, these include Music, French, Drama, Science, Art, Geography, Design Technology, Ballet, Judo and swimming.

Since English plays an essential role in nearly all subjects, language development plays a central part in our teaching.  Investigative approaches are encouraged in Maths and science.

Our role is to give children good work patterns which will remain with them for life.

Children leave The Mead at the end of the academic year in which they are eleven having been prepared for Kent Selection and Common Entrance.  During the children’s last year staff and parents discuss various options of secondary education to ensure that each child goes into the school that best suits them.  These decisions are guided by amongst other factors, the results of a range of standardised tests, commencing in year 1 and continuing twice yearly at Key Stage Two.

The School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  These may vary from term to term but can include sport, cookery, stained glass making, pottery, fun French, Eco, choir and Italian club.  These together with supervised prep are incorporated into an extended day finishing at 5.30pm.
